Y = Your Favorite Genres
I don't know, I think using the word 'your' might be cheating a little, but I had trouble coming up with a word for Y. So today I want to discuss genres.
If you are unfamiliar with the word 'genre' it's a way of grouping works of literature, movies, music, and art together by subject or type.
I feel like my reading habits are eclectic. I try read from multiple genres a year, but I do tend to gravitate toward Speculative Fiction more often than not. Speculative fiction is a genre, but it's also an umbrella term to cover the sub-genres of Fantasy, Science Fiction, and Horror. I'd say I read fantasy the most, science fiction second, and horror the least of the three. It's odd to think of fantasy, sci-fi and horror as sub-genres, because all three have sub-genres of their own that I don't intend to detail because that could go on for a long time.
There's also Non-Fiction which, like Speculative Fiction, can cover many mini subjects like History, Memoirs, Biographies, and True Crime. I'd say I read Non-Fiction the least of any subject; probably one book a year, two max. Last year marked the first time I ever read a true crime novel, and that was actually to fulfill a letter for this particular challenge.
There's Contemporary Fiction, books designed to be set in modern times with no fantastic elements to it, where books deal with society, identity, relationships, and an assortment of other modern-day problems.
And I wouldn't dare forget Historical Fiction, which as you may have guessed, are stories that take place in the past... Some can be based on real life events, while others merely happen during a specific time period.
Then we have Romance, a genre that I detest, where the story is simply the people falling in love and can have sub-genres based on any of the previously mentioned genres. And based on the book blogs I've visited, it is an insanely popular genre, I just miss the point. I need adventure and love stories don't usually meet my standards.
Now I'm sure I probably left something out, but when it comes to books there is usually a genre for everyone. Which begs the question:
What genre do you prefer? Why do you like it? What's your favorite book in this genre?

Historical fiction is my favorite. While I generally don't read romance, I don't mind a love story in the middle of something else. But I am happy to read a well-written book in any genre.
ReplyDeleteI like a good historical fiction once in a while.
DeleteJamie (jannghi.blogspot.com): I can't really pick a favorite genre! I'm up to radioing just about anything, though I go light on horror.
ReplyDeleteI don't read a ton of horror, probably one a year, but when i do read it i have the expectation that it will live up to its name.
DeleteHistorical Fiction is my favorite genre when I do read fiction. In close second, horror (I get vicarious chills). But, as you know, non-fiction (specifically history) is my usual jam.
ReplyDeleteI probably should be embarrassed to admit this, but I think in a previous post i already have, most of my non-fiction reads are about famous horses...which is a sort of history...just probably not an overly important one.
DeleteI don't know, I think "your" applies. I went with Yikes, which I think is way more of cheating. (My Z is a total cheat, but I did a couple years of zoinks and zzzz, so what's cheating, really?)
ReplyDeleteI like zoinks! its very out of the box.
DeleteMysteries. Pretty much my only choice, sometimes they call them suspense. Now and then I find an interesting general fiction. I also read poetry. I don't read historical fiction, expect that is now books set in 1970 or so! To me that isn't historical!
ReplyDeleteI would consider the 1970s historical and it was an interesting decade.
