K = Kaboodle

#AtoZChallenge 2026 letter K

As in the whole kit-and-kaboodle.

That's right. Today we're going to talk about those collections.

My collection, as you may have guessed it, is made up of books. It's organized by genre (mostly). I can always put my hands on a fantasy or a mystery or a horse book (horses, I've determined, are their own genre) because I always know exactly where it is. My only deviation from genre, is author collections. If I have multiple books by the same author, I group them together instead.

I haven't counted my books. I don't know how many I have. Not as much as some, but definitely more than others.

I don't share my books often. They usually come home dog-eared or with teeth marks from an inquiring kitten or smelling of cigarette smoke and occasionally they don't come home at all. I'm a collector you see, unless I truly didn't like a book and think someone else will enjoy it more, I don't just hand them out. I might want to read them again and I certainly don't want them to go missing.

As previously mentioned, my collection includes fantasy, mystery, and horses. But there's also historical fiction, science fiction, and nonfiction. I've got at least one true crime novel, some horror, and a few classics. I've dabbled in just about everything, although fantasy is my home base, and sci-fi my vacation home. I could put my genres in order of favorite to least, but I fear that may be a little dull.

Most of us collect something. Pokémon cards, video games, music... I had a grandmother who collected teaspoons; I can still see them hanging on her kitchen walls. I have an aunt who collects salt and pepper shakers, and they're shelved in every corner of her house. There's always something we hold dear, something we're convinced we need more of.

What do you collect? And do you know how many you might have? How long have you been collecting? Tell me all about your collections in the comments section.

  1. I collect dust generally.
    Seriously, I am very proud of my collection of books. Like I told you, most are non-fiction. I'm a nerd that way.

  2. I have a bunch of books, but I am not a true collector ~ I don’t have the space mainly. I like to give them to friends or donate them to the library when I’m done. (A few I do keep forever.) I have some Caithness paperweights and kitty trinkets, but at this point with limited space, I would say I am not collecting anything!

  3. I'm not really a collector, either. Our books are generally arranged by genre, with like authors grouped together.

    1. I'm biased, but I believe genres is a good way to go. I've heard some people do alphabetical or by cover color... But i don't get how it works... There's nothing wrong with doing that if that's what makes you happy, but I've never said, "I'm in the mood to read something purple today."

  5. You should see my digital books. I've got hundreds of those. Most I picked up free (hence why I have so many). I have no excuse to say I have nothing to read.

    1. e-readers are great, arent they? they save so much space, and you can get books without ever leaving your house.

  6. Oh, dear... I collect. Dog figurines. Salt and pepper shakers. Stamps. Postcards. Vintage kitchen gadgets. Artwork. Antique photographs. Antique books. Stuff in general. I go to thrift stores a few times a week and collect. And of course, as Al mentioned, I collect a lot of dust.

    1. Oh, antique photographs, that's a nice thing to collect. Little pieces of history.
